What to Look for in Heel Wheel Shoes and Where Heelys Fits In

Every heel wheel shoe looks more or less the same in a product photo: a trainer with a wheel in the heel. The differences that decide whether a pair gets worn for a year or abandoned after a fortnight are the ones a photo does not show, and most of them only become obvious after the box is open.

Here are nine things worth checking before you order, whichever brand you end up with.

1. Does the Heel Wheel Come Out by Hand or Retract Into the Sole?

This is the biggest practical difference between models and almost nobody thinks about it until they are standing on a pavement in the cold.

On a classic heel wheel shoe, including Heelys, the wheel is pulled out by hand and a plastic plug goes into the empty slot. Every time you want to walk normally you are carrying two loose parts in a pocket, and a plug that goes down a drain is a shoe you cannot use properly again.

2. Can You Add a Front Wheel to Heel Wheel Shoes?

A classic heel wheel shoe rolls on one point, under the heel. You tip back, balance on that single wheel and glide. That is the whole appeal and it is also why the first hour is hard.

A second wheel at the front changes that. Fitted, the shoe rolls on two points spread along the length of the foot instead of one under the heel, and a longer base is easier to balance on. Most beginners start with the front wheel in and take it out weeks later, once the heel glide feels natural. One pair then covers both stages of learning instead of two.

Heelys have something that sounds like this and is not. Their Pro 20 X2 puts two wheels in each shoe, and their own copy calls the forward one a removable front wheel. But look at the sole: both wheels sit in the heel, one behind the other, and the forefoot is plain tread. Taking the forward wheel out returns you to a single heel wheel. It lengthens the base at the back of the shoe rather than putting anything under the ball of the foot.

3. Half Sizes: Why They Matter More in Heel Wheel Shoes

In an ordinary trainer, half a size too big is a minor annoyance. In a shoe you balance and roll in, a heel that lifts inside the shoe is exactly where control goes.

Heelys do not make half sizes. Their own size chart says so plainly: "Sorry, we don't do half sizes. At Heelys, we do everything in full, but if you're between sizes, we recommend sizing up for the best fit." If you wear a 7.5, you order an 8 and hope.

Check: measure your foot in centimetres and compare it to the brand's own chart. Never order from the size of a previous pair.

4. What Size Range Do Heel Wheel Shoes Come In?

Ranges are quoted loosely, and "adult sizes available" can mean almost anything.

The Kick Speed heel wheel range runs from US 0.5 to US 10, which is roughly 17.6 cm to 27.4 cm of internal shoe length. The bottom of that fits many children around four or five. The top covers teenagers and most women. It does not cover adult men with larger feet, and we would rather say so here than take an order that comes back.

Heelys run larger at the top of their range — their chart reaches 33 cm — so if your foot measures longer than about 27.4 cm, that is where to look.

Check: both ends of the range in centimetres rather than US numbers, and whether the size you need is actually in stock rather than merely listed.

5. LED Lights, or Heel Wheel Shoes Without Them

A light-up sole is the reason many children want these shoes and the reason many adults do not. Decide before you shop, because a lot of brands only make one or the other.

6. Colours and Design in Heel Wheel Shoes

This is the criterion nobody writes down and everybody decides on. A shoe left in the cupboard because the colour is wrong is a wasted purchase, however good the wheel is.

7. Low-Top or Mid-Top Heel Wheel Shoes?

The wheel system is identical between the two cuts. What changes is the upper.

Low-tops sit below the ankle bone. Lighter, more flexible, and they pass more easily as ordinary trainers when the wheels are away. Seven of the ten models are low-tops, and most first pairs are too.

Mid-tops cut above the ankle and close around it. The foot sits more firmly inside the shoe, which many riders prefer once they are moving, and the taller silhouette carries the chunkier designs a low profile cannot.

Neither is safer than the other. Pick the one you would rather be seen in, because that is the one that gets worn.

8. What Comes in the Box, and What Happens When the Wheels Wear Down

Two shoes at the same price are not always the same purchase.
