There are two ways to roll, and the difference matters more than the price does. Roller skate shoes with pop-out wheels hide a full four-wheel chassis inside the sole — press the heel button and the wheels drop out, press again and they lock away. That is a real skate underfoot, for riders who want to skate rather than glide. Heel wheel shoes put the wheel under the heel for the classic Heelys-style glide, and every model in that range also takes a detachable wheel under the front of the foot — so a beginner can learn on a longer base and take it out once they are steady.

Narrow it down however you shop. LED light-up shoes for visibility on evening rides, or plain soles without LED for school and everyday wear. Mid tops sit higher around the ankle, low tops are lighter and pass more easily as ordinary trainers when the wheels are away.
