Heelys for Girls: The One Sizing Detail Parents Find Out Too Late
If you have been looking at Heelys for girls, you have probably already found the colours, the licensed designs and the price. What most parents do not find until the box arrives is the sizing.
Heelys do not make half sizes. That is not a rumour or a stock problem — it is written on their own size guide page: "Sorry, we don't do half sizes. At Heelys, we do everything in full." Their advice, if your daughter falls between two sizes, is to size up.
For a lot of shoes that would be fine. For a shoe with a wheel in the heel, it is the one thing that decides whether she rides it or gives up on it. This article explains why, what to measure, and what your options are — including where Heelys are genuinely the better buy.
Do Heelys make girls' sizes?
Yes. Heelys do not split their range into "boys" and "girls" — they run one youth size scale and put different colourways on it. In practice the girls' end of their catalogue is built around licensed designs: Hello Kitty & Friends, Ivory Ella and a few seasonal collaborations, on models like the Pro 20, the Kama and the Kolect.
Their youth sizes look like this:
| Heelys size | Foot length | UK | EU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13Y | 18 cm | 12 | 31 |
| 1Y | 19 cm | 13 | 32 |
| 2Y | 20 cm | 1 | 33 |
| 3Y | 21 cm | 2 | 34 |
| 4Y (also sold as 5W) | 22 cm | 3 | 35 |
| 5Y (6W) | 23 cm | 4 | 36.5 |
| 6Y (7W) | 24 cm | 5 | 38 |
| 7Y (8W) | 25 cm | 6 | 39 |
| 8Y (9W) | 26 cm | 7 | 40.5 |
Two things worth noticing before you read on.
First, each step is one full centimetre. There is nothing between 21 cm and 22 cm. If your daughter measures 21.5 cm, she does not have a size — she has a choice between too small and too big.
Second, a label like 4Y/5W is not a half size. It is one shoe with two names on it, because a youth 4 and a women's 5 are the same length. Plenty of parents see the slash and assume it means extra sizing granularity. It does not.
Why half a size matters more here than in a school shoe
A heel wheel shoe works by pivoting. Your daughter walks flat, then rocks back onto the wheel and rolls. Everything about that movement is controlled from the heel.
If the shoe is a centimetre long, her heel lifts inside it every time she tips back. She loses the feel of where the wheel is, the shoe steers instead of her, and the usual result is that she wobbles, gets nervous, and the shoes end up in a cupboard. Parents often read this as "she just isn't sporty". Usually it is a centimetre of empty space.
The other direction is not better. Sizing down so the heel is locked in leaves no room for toes, and feet at this age keep growing. A shoe bought tight is a shoe that fits for one summer.
This is the whole reason half sizes exist. A US half size is about half a centimetre — exactly the gap that keeps causing the problem.
How to work out her size properly
Do not convert from her trainers. Sneaker sizing varies enormously between brands, and a "size 2" in one brand can be nearly a centimetre off a "size 2" in another. Measure the foot instead. It takes two minutes.
- Put a sheet of paper flat against a wall.
- Have her stand on it, heel touching the wall, weight on both feet.
- Mark the tip of her longest toe — which is not always the big toe.
- Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres.
- Do both feet. They are rarely identical. Use the larger one.
Measure in the evening, when feet are at their largest, and measure in the socks she will actually skate in. Then add about 0.5 cm of room — enough for the foot to sit comfortably, not enough for the heel to travel.
If the number that comes out lands on a half — 21.5, 22.5, 23.5 — that is exactly the point where the Heelys chart has no answer for you.
Colours and designs
Heelys lean on licences. Hello Kitty & Friends runs across several of their models, Ivory Ella adds a softer illustrated look, and Minecraft appears on the Pro 25. If your daughter has asked for a specific character, that is a real reason to buy them and no alternative will replace it.
If the ask is a colour rather than a character, the Kick Speed™ heel wheel range covers the same ground:
- Spectra Glow MID — six colourways including pink, silver and gold, mid-cut around the ankle
- Nebula LOW — soft pastel pink and blue, no LED, plain enough for school
- Photon Glow LOW — pink, silver or black, built specifically for smaller feet
- Plasma Flow LOW — violet, pink or blue with LED
- Cloud LOW — camo-pattern pink and white, no LED
- City LOW — purple, blue or white, the plainest of the range
LED or no LED?
Worth deciding before you pick a model, because it narrows the list fast.
LED soles light up as she rolls and are usually rechargeable by USB. They are the ones children ask for, and they help her be seen on a driveway or a path in the evening.
Plain soles matter if the shoes are going to school. Plenty of schools that tolerate wheeled shoes at all will not tolerate flashing ones, and a plain sole passes as an ordinary trainer once the wheel is out. If they are being bought as everyday shoes rather than as a toy, look at the no-LED range first.
Heelys sell both as well. Their licensed girls' models are mostly plain-soled.
Where the sizes actually land
The Kick Speed™ heel wheel models are sized in US, and in the smaller sizes they run in half-size steps — which is where a growing foot needs them.
| Model | Sizes | LED | Cut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photon Glow LOW | US 1 – 5.5, every half size | Yes | Low |
| Air Pegasus MID | US 1 – 8.5, every half size | Yes | Mid |
| Cloud LOW | US 0.5 – 9.5 | No | Low |
| Spectra Glow MID | US 1 – 10 | Yes | Mid |
| Nebula LOW | US 1 – 8.5 | No | Low |
| City LOW | US 1 – 8.5 | No | Low |
Photon Glow and Air Pegasus run a complete half-size ladder — 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and up. The rest carry half sizes through the small end of the range and then move to wider steps.
Check the size chart on the product page against her measurement in centimetres rather than converting from another brand.
Where Heelys are the better choice
Two situations, and they are real ones.
She wants a specific character. Hello Kitty, Minecraft, Ivory Ella — those are licences Heelys hold. If your daughter has decided she wants Hello Kitty skate shoes, nothing else is going to satisfy that, and buying her something in the right shade of pink instead is not the same thing.
Her feet are past US women's 9. Heelys' scale continues into adult men's sizing, up to 15M. Kick Speed stops at US 10. If she is a tall teenager, they can dress her feet and we cannot — though if she is close to that line, it is worth reading our guide to heel wheel shoes for women before you rule us out.
Outside those two, the decision comes down to whether the shoe fits closely enough for her to control it.
One more thing about the front of the shoe
A beginner's biggest problem is not speed. It is that a single wheel under the heel gives her a very short base to balance on — she is essentially standing on one point per foot and trying not to sit down.
Heelys' answer to this is the X2 range, which puts two wheels in each shoe. It is worth understanding what that actually does: both X2 wheels sit under the heel, one behind the other. That lengthens the contact patch at the back of the shoe, which does help. The front of the foot stays plain tread.
Every Kick Speed heel wheel model takes a second wheel that fits under the forefoot, and it comes off when she no longer wants it. A longer base while she is learning, an ordinary heel wheel shoe once she is steady. It is the same idea as training wheels, and it is removed the same way.
If you want the full comparison, we have written it up in the best Heelys alternative for kids.
If she wants to skate rather than glide
Some children do not want to glide at all — they want to skate. Roller skate shoes with pop-out wheels hide a four-wheel chassis inside the sole. Press the button in the heel and the wheels drop down; press again and they lock away and the shoe walks like an ordinary trainer.
Four wheels spread across the whole length of the foot is a more forgiving base than one wheel under the heel. The trade is weight and price, and pop-out sizes vary by model: Original LOW White roller skate shoes include a US 1.5 option. Our heel wheel roller shoes also offer smaller sizes. What to do next
- Measure both feet in centimetres, in the evening, in skating socks.
- Take the larger foot and add 0.5 cm.
- If that number lands on a half, you now know why the Heelys chart has been frustrating you.
- Decide LED or plain — school or not school.
- Then pick the colour, which is the part she cares about anyway.
The heel wheel range runs from $69.99 to $99.99 and covers US 0.5 to 10. If she wants the full four-wheel version instead, the pop-out range is $129.99 to $219.99.
Shipping is free within the United States and unworn pairs can go back for 90 days, so a size that turns out wrong is not a shoe you are stuck with.
Frequently asked questions
Do Heelys make half sizes?
No. Heelys state on their own size guide that they do not make half sizes, and recommend sizing up if you fall between two. Their youth sizes step in full sizes, which is about one centimetre per step.
What does 4Y/5W mean on a Heelys size chart?
It is one size with two labels. A youth 4 and a women's 5 are the same foot length, about 22 cm, so the shoe is sold under both names. It is not a half size and it does not sit between 4 and 5.
Do Heelys make separate shoes for girls?
Not as a separate size range. Heelys run one youth scale and offer different colourways and licensed designs on it, including Hello Kitty & Friends and Ivory Ella. The shoe underneath is the same.
What size should I buy if my daughter is between sizes?
Measure her longer foot in centimetres and add about 0.5 cm. If the result falls between two full sizes, look for a brand that makes the half size rather than sizing up a full centimetre — a heel that moves inside the shoe is what makes a wheeled shoe hard to control.
What is the smallest Heelys size?
Their scale starts at 13Y, which is 18 cm, roughly a UK 12 or EU 31. Below that they do not have a size.
How much do heel wheel shoes for girls cost?
The Kick Speed heel wheel range runs from $69.99 to $99.99 depending on the model and whether it has an LED sole. Four-wheel pop-out roller skate shoes run from $129.99 to $219.99.
Are heel wheel shoes allowed at school?
It varies by school and many do not allow riding them on the premises. Where they are permitted as footwear, a plain sole is far more likely to be accepted than an LED one, and the wheel can be removed so the shoe walks as an ordinary trainer.
